Need More Help Figuring Out Which Aerial Lift You Need?

We can help. Each aerial lift category is described below. We have also created a page with videos of aerial lifts to help in your selection.

Articulating Boom

Articulating boom lifts allow the driver to maneuver the boom in any direction from the work platform, without lowering the basket.

An articulating boom allows for unhinging at certain points to make reaching certain higher elevations easier. An articulating boom is an aerial lift specifically created with at least two boom sections that are hinged.

Articulating boom lifts are used in applications that require reaching over and above various equipment and pieces of machinery.

Articulating boom lifts also afford a range of movement above that of other types of lifts that have a more limited motion. An articulating boom lift or platform is a type of crane that utilizes hydraulic cylinders.

Articulating boom lifts typically operate using the power source of electric motors or internal combustion engines. They are available from a number of manufacturers in a variety of sizes and with different features. They are also used in accessing higher spots that would be difficult to reach using a straight or telescoping boom lift. These lifts are also capable of rotating 360 degrees.

Articulating boom lifts are considered to be highly versatile and are often used in construction, landscaping and plant maintenance. They are designed to be driven, even at with the boom completely elevated. They are also narrow enough to be maneuvered easily though aisles and crowded work areas. The boom on these lifts is designed to allow for lowering, raising, or extending, while keeping the work platform both steady and in a horizontal position.

Telescopic Boom

A telescopic boom lift is a boom lift whose mast can extend to achieve extended heights. Telescopic boom lifts are especially useful for projects that require reach capability. Typically the machine's turntable may be rotated 360 degrees continuously in either direction.

Telescopic booms offer greater horizontal outreach than any other type of aerial platform. They are often used in construction and industrial applications such as road building, bridge work, painting and landscaping.

Telescopic boom lifts can navigate around obstacles. They can be maneuvered forward or backward and steered in any direction by the operator from the work platform, even while the boom is extended. Some telescopic boom lift models are equipped with an articulating boom called a jib that provides extra reach and range.

Their long, telescoping booms can reach up to 140'. They're perfect for areas with limited access in construction and industrial applications. The boom can be raised or lowered from vertical to below horizontal and extended while the work platform remains horizontal.

Scissor Lifts

The scissor lift, sometimes known as a table lift, is an industrial lift that has been modified for retail and wholesale settings. When extended, the scissor lift reaches anywhere from 21 to 62 feet above ground, depending on its size and purpose. Basically, the scissor lift is platform with wheels that acts like a forklift. It can be powered by hydraulics, diesel or an electric motor.

In a non-industrial setting, the scissor lift is useful for completing tasks which require the speed, mobility and transporting of people and material above ground level. As a relative to the forklift, the scissor lift is more portable and effective.

The scissor lift is unique in that it doesn't use a straight support to raise workers into the air. Rather, the scissor lift platform raises when the linked, folding supports underneath it draw together, stretching it upward. The scissor lift's design keeps it from traveling with a constant speed, instead traveling faster in the middle of its climb and slower as it elevates. Modern scissor lifts can be seen in nearly all manufacturing and production situations, from construction to assembly to vehicle repair and more. Newer models can travel over smooth surfaces or the uneven terrain of a construction site.

Towable Boom Lifts

Towable boom lifts, also known as trailer mounted boom lifts, are aerial lifts that provide a convenient built-in towing capability.

Lightweight and maneuverable, they're ideal for congested jobsites and are frequently used by contractors, maintenance crews and painters.

Towable boom lifts are easily transported and are set up and ready to use in minutes. Trailer mounted booms are easily towed behind a pickup or SUV.

One advantage of the smaller towable boom over larger aerial lifts is that they are lightweight enough to use on lawns, slate or gymnasium floors. Some trailer mounted boom lifts offer an articulating jib boom option for expanded reaching capabilities. The biggest advantage to trailer mounted boom lifts are their mobility. It can be very expensive to move a standard boom lift from job to job. A trailer mounted boom lift is a perfect fit for those home renovations and property management needs.

Towable boom lifts are also low maintenance. Without a drive train or a large engine, towable lifts have less moving parts that can break down.

Most towable lifts are equipped with an articulating boom but some models have a telescopic arm. Unlike an articulating or telescopic boom lift, towable lifts are not self-propelled.

Reach Forklifts - Telehandlers

Telehandlers are known by a variety of names, including extendible reach forklifts and telescopic handlers. They are capable of handling a variety of tasks that require lifting heavier materials and reaching up to six stories high.

An extendible reach forklift is an industrial truck used to lift large loads to extended heights. Telehandlers are commonly used in the construction and renovation of taller buildings.

Reach forklifts are powerful machines that are capable of lifting heavy loads to great heights. Telehandlers have the ability to lift 8,000 to 10,000 pound loads and have a 42 to 54 foot reach capability.

Additionally, many attachments are available which makes them a very versatile machine. Construction, masonry, farming, landscaping and demolition are just a few of the applications where reach forklifts are utilized.

Carry Deck Cranes

Carry Deck Cranes are compact cranes that can lift up to 30,000 lbs. They are perfect for lifting applications requiring a compact, low-profile crane that will clear overhead obstructions and maneuver in tight spaces.

Carry Deck Cranes are designed for both indoor and outdoor jobsites. They feature telescoping booms and a load deck for material handling. Carry Deck Cranes are self-propelled industrial cranes.

Made for the workplace, the Carry Deck Crane is usually capable of picking up a load and traveling with it. The crane is equipped with a flat deck that is designed to be used as a carrying surface. Manufacturers include Grove, Broderson and Shuttlelift.

Personnel Lifts

A personnel lift is an aerial lift which combines the portability of a ladder with the stability of an aerial work platform. A personnel lift is simple to set up and easily rolls through standard doorways, and wide-base models roll through typical industrial double doorways. A rigid vertical mast and leveling jacks offer stability for the user. The vertical mast raises the work platform to the required height.

A personnel lift provides greater stability than ladders and allows workers to move within the basket, hands-free, helping to increase safety. The platform typically contains a work tray to carry tools and materials.

Personnel lifts are capable of reaching up to 47 feet and lifting up to 300 pounds. Total weight load and working height capacity depends on the individual model. Most personnel lifts platforms carry one person only.

Personnel lifts are aerial work platforms designed on a smaller, more compact scale. Ideal for indoor use and suitable for fragile floor surfaces, the aerial work platform is usually electrically powered and is convenient for transporting from one work area to another due to its lightweight and compact design.
